Brick Plant (BP) ADTL to introduce KS Brick Plant in Bangladesh

Natural sandstone has been used as a masonary unit since ages.Sand and lime, from which it was created by nature, have been applied in mortars as from the earliest times of ancient history.

After the massive destruction in Second world war in Europe mainly in Germany they started new infrastructural development, building comstruction, major renovation in the building structures with the calsium silicate bricks and the present new buildings since 2nd world war is built by the calsium silicate bricks very popularly known as KS bricks.

It is emphasized that this study is an attempt to depict the general perspective and usage of sub-standard basic construction materials in construction industry and infrastructure development in Bangladesh. One of such major basic construction materials are clay bricks (Kiln burnt) and porous low compressed sand cement bricks / block presently being used in every where in construction of building, load bearing structures, fencing walls, road works in base-course, edging and pavement work, using as course aggregate (khoa) for all classes of concrete work, river training work, retaining structures and where not.

In tropical country brick walls get quickly heated causing energy loss and uncomfortable. Because of poorly managed brick manufacturing processes in Bangladesh, it never matches with the basic specification requirement set by Bangladesh standards and testing manuals published lastly on 7th Feb / 2007, 2nd revision under specification BDS-208-2002. And perhaps there is none to understand the real impact of using conventional clay bricks in Bangladesh.

All of the said factors and many more untold factors severely affects always causing very poor level of masonry work damaging the durability of structures as a whole, a puzzling and uncontrollable catastrophic situation in making buildings, roads, walls & fences, edges & footpath every where. Another catastrophic situation which are much more damaging is use of bricks chips / khoa as course aggregate in concrete making & certainly that cannot or just impossible to attain designed strength of concrete for any kind of structural work by using clay brick chips. The whole infrastructural health thus becoming weaker to withstand any natural calamities, earth quakes or for any sort of phenomena that may take place any moment in Bangladesh.

KS bricks is one of the modern bricks used for masonry work in the developed countries and many developing countries as tested, qualified, specified, conforming all of the specifications in U.S.A., Canada all European countries, Japan, partly in China, partly in South East Asia, Australia, part of Africa, the then USSR (CIS countries) and in all modern societies.

Calsium silicate units are produced by mixing sand, lime and water. This mixture of natural ingredients is moulded into shape by mechanical or hydraulic presses. Calcium Silicate bricks are accurate in size, ensuring ease of placement resulting in a reduction in workload for the bricklayer. Offering durability, strength and performance, at a cost lower than similar building materials having the following advantages:

1. Low cost, accuracy and uniformity of shape which makes laying and bonding easy.
2. Smooth surface and light color makes them suitable for internal walls without plaster i.e.; factory units, sheds etc.
3. Invariably free from efflorescence.
4. Unaffected by repeated freezing or thawing.
5. Resistance to fire and the transfer of heat and sound is similar to that of clay bricks.
6. Its manufacture uses reusable energy and biogas.
7. No harmful residues or emissions are produced.
